Intro

So … my head is basically spinning right now. But I’m trying to pull it together to write a few coherent sentences. Because this is the craziest shit I’ve ever seen.

Ten Steps:

#1: Take a deep breath, turn off Spotify or the TV and pay attention.

#2: If you haven’t already, go listen — right now — to my Blister Podcast conversation with Renoun founder, Cyrus Schenck, where we discuss how the brand came to be, and what exactly “HDT” is.

#3: Then immediately go listen to our latest GEAR:30 podcast, “Testing in Telluride,” specifically minute 29:31, where I talk about my first turns on the Endurance 98.

#4: Come back and carefully study our measured specs on this ski.

#5: Ask yourself repeatedly, “Are those measured specs and flex pattern numbers a typo??”

#6: Be assured that the answer to step #5 is, “No. They aren’t typos.”

#7: Read our measured specs and flex numbers again.

#8: Repeat steps #2 and #3.

#9: Come back tomorrow and read my Flash Review. I’m not posting it now, because I sound like a crazy person, so I want to sleep on this before I go on record.

#10: Ok, happy reading. And buckle up.

What Renoun says about the Endurance 98:

“Marveled for its innovative and award-winning design, the ENDURANCE is our flagship model with nothing left to chance.

Perfected after years of R&D, the ENDURANCE was the test bed for a technology that would deliver the first ‘adaptable’ ski in the world.

This patented technology, dubbed HDT™, has the ability to adjust in real-time to the skier and the snow conditions. Any skier, any snow. It’s the most functional and versatile ski in the world. Period.

On the slopes, the ENDURANCE is light and playful in softer conditions, yet rock solid and sturdy when the going gets rough – thanks to HDT™.

The ENDURANCE is the first ski made with HDT™ and that puts it in a category by itself. And in this case, that’s the best place to be.

If you can’t say your favorite type of terrain because you “ski everywhere” – than this is your ski.”

Shape / Rocker Profile

Nothing terribly strange here. Honestly, the strangest thing is just how narrow the tips / shovels of this all-mountain ski are — they kind of look like wide mogul skis.

Flex Pattern

Tips: 5.5
Shovels: 6.5-7.5
In Front of Toe Piece: 8-9.5
Underfoot: 10
Behind Heel Piece: 9-8
Tails: 7.5-7

You read that right.

Dimensions / Sidecut Radius

Stated sidecut radius of 22 meters. Now listen again to what I said on the GEAR:30 podcast.

Weight

1507 & 1595 Salomon MTN Explore 95, 184 cm
1633 & 1638 Faction Prime 2.0, 184 cm
1686 & 1725 Renoun Endurance 98, 184 cm
1720 & 1747 Line Sick Day Tourist 102, 186 cm
1745 & 1747 4FRNT Raven, 184 cm
1807 & 1833 Fischer Ranger 98 Ti, 180 cm
1894 & 1980 Black Crows Daemon, 183.6 cm
1920 & 1968 Head Kore 99, 189 cm
1966 & 1973 Liberty Origin 96, 187 cm (18/19)
2024 & 2029 Salomon QST 99, 188 cm
2049 & 2065 Volkl Mantra M5, 177 cm
2054 & 2059 ON3P Wrenegade 98, 184 cm
2124 & 2137 Blizzard Bonafide, 180 cm
2344 & 2367 J Skis Masterblaster, 187 cm
2373 & 2397 Head Monster 98, 184 cm

Holy crap. The Endurance 98 is a very light ski. Like, lighter than two of our all-time favorite touring skis (4FRNT Raven & Line Sick Day Tourist 102).

And way lighter than any all-mountain inbounds ski we’ve tested.

And if this were any other ski, we would basically dismiss any hope for even decent high-speed stability.

And yet, if you follow us on Instagram, you’ll have seen a picture of the 184 cm Endurance 98 next to the 184 cm Head Monster 98, which is one of the heaviest, stiffest, and most stable 98mm-underfoot skis we’ve ever tested.

So why did I spend all day yesterday A/B-ing the Monster 98 against a ski that’s nearly 700 grams lighter per ski?

Again, I’m going to sleep on my Flash Review before we post it tomorrow, because right now, I’ve either lost my mind, or… ?

  1. Super excited to hear your thoughts Jonathan. For now I’ll have to listen to the podcast and reread that specs list (?!?!) for the hundredth time…

  2. As someone who’s been using this for both a daily driver on-piste, and for touring the NE backcountry this year (with tecton 12s & maestrale RSs for those curious) I’m super excited to see the review! I plug them to damn near everyone I meet.
