When the world’s elite athletes compete later this month at the Olympic Games in Paris, who treats them? And when injuries happen, how are decisions made about whether the athlete can continue to compete? To answer these questions and how it all works, our guest today is Dr. Gloria Beim, who is the Head Team Physician at the Olympic Games for Team USA.

Dr. Beim is a sports medicine specialist and orthopedic surgeon in Colorado that has been working with professional teams and providing medical direction at elite athletic events around the world for the past 29 years, including (and this is just a very partial list here) athletes at the Winter X Games and US Ski and Snowboard Teams, and in 2001, Dr. Beim began working with the United States Olympic Committee. In 2004, she was a physician for Team USA in Athens, and she served in this same role at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where she was also the Venue Medical Director. She was the Chief Medical Officer for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, and she is the Head Physician for Team USA at the Olympic Games in Paris that begin in just a few weeks.

Dr. Beim and I talk about the Olympics and the medical teams that support athletes there, and we also discuss Dr. Beim’s truly remarkable story that led to a life in medical care, where she continues to serve everyone from regular folks in rural communities, to some of the greatest athletes in human history.
