In today’s episode, I talk with several of our reviewers about some of the latest gear they’ve been testing. Paul Forward discusses a bunch of the lightweight powder touring skis he’s been on, as well as some new models from Heritage Lab. Then, Kristin Sinnott and Sascha Anastas cover some new all-mountain skis and apparel that they’ve been using, and we round things out with a conversation with Dylan Wood, where we cover some new and very interesting big-mountain skis, including the Dynastar M-Free 112, how it compares to the Rossignol Sender Free 110, the Head Kore 112 Ti, and more.

  1. Loved the deep dive into the details of different powder touring skis with Paul, no such thing as going off track!

I’m also wondering what the fat ski camber is about, definitely don’t need camber for skinning, especially with such big contact patch.

Although there are a few lightweight touring 120-ish options the Moonlight Cruiser has seemingly disappeared and DPS really needs to re-release their Tour1 Lotus 124!

  2. I hope you guys get to review the new La Machine 5. I don’t know for sure what year it changed but it definitely has camber under foot now.

    • It changed for this season and also came in a new length, 192. It would be interesting to hear what Paul has to say about it since he was happy they came in the new longer length but worried they would change the full-rocker shape, which has now happened.

  3. Hi guys, another nice episode with some powder ski talking I like the best :-).

@Paul I have a similar ski taste and even purchased a Folsom Rapture because of you. Love them!

One other ski I have, and I think you might really like as a powder touring ski, is from Ronin. Jonno does not have it on its website yet, so let’s say it is still on the secret menu ;-). It is the Ronin 122 and comes in two lengths, 188 or 195, and can be customized to your preference. It is a full rocker ski. The specs of mine are 145 – 122 – 135 in 188cm length. We tried a new construction between LTE and MFD and they came out at 1680g. The skis are simply beautifully made and come with a perfect tuning.

The winter was not great in the Alps, and I only took them out a couple of times. But they clicked immediately, and I already felt confident opening up on the first run. They do remind me of the Rapture and have similar traits in a much lighter build. I think I do not need to mention, as Jonathan has pointed out so many times, that light skis also have limitations, and I agree with that. Of course, they are less stable than heavier skis. But for the weight, the construction with the flax is surprisingly damp.

Jonno is an amazing ski builder and a great guy and I have a feeling that you would love those skis. Maybe you go for it, and I will read a review one day. :-) There have been Blister reviews of Ronin’s before.
