  1. Oof that heli story sucks… But heli skiing is such a crap shoot. Save money and significantly increase your odds by doing a cat trip, or Japan, or a bc hut trip. And if you do go heli, pick a cheaper operation where you’re not paying a premium for their wine cellar and rated chefs. PNH in Cordova is one example of great terrain but modest lodging and food.

    • I promised myself (and others) that I wouldn’t comment on controversial topics here any more so I’ll keep this short, but…

To Cody’s point about Tariffs, if your goal is truly to bring manufacturing onshore then the way to do it is to implement gradual increases on a fixed and clearly communicated schedule over a number of years, to allow the economies involved to reach a new equilibrium. Of course the challenge with that is that you have to make the schedule credible (i.e. convince the market players that you will actually follow through with it) or else economic players will just bet against you.

To say that the US has “moved to a service economy” is a bit inaccurate. The inflation-adjusted value of US manufacturing has been relatively constant over the past 70 years or so. All of the economic growth in that time has come from services, that that’s why the _percentage_ of the GDP from manufacturing has decreased. The other thing that has happened is that automation (and offshoring of more labor-intensive, lower-value jobs) has reduced the number of workers required to generate that output.

wrt the FWT I totally agree with your assessments of the level of skiing. I do think that this year’s relatively awful snow in the EU cast a long shadow over the second half of the season. We all got spoiled by last year’s Verbier comp in particular. I also agree that there should be more women on the tour and at Verbier.

      • Also and to be clear, I don’t think that tariffs are the right way to move manufacturing onshore even if that is your goal. They are effectively a massively regressive tax, disproportionately impacting the people with the least income (who tend to spend a larger percentage of their income on goods vs services). That’s a key difference from the IRA/CHIPS approach, which subsidized chosen industries using progressive taxes that largely impact the highest earners.

  2. Jonathan and Cody,
This was a good show. Tariffs are going to be a significant factor for a LONG time, with far reaching consequences. In both the short term and the long term our cost as individuals will increase. Cody’s comments on the planning cycle is pretty much spot on, especially in the short term. Long term larger companies will diversify, but small companies and single source companies are #%$*d.
The next question though, is how are relationships with our allies really being impacted. Regardless of how strong we (US) is as a country economically and militarily, we can’t fight the whole world on either front.

Jonathan, I am reading Stolen Focus on your recommendation. I have a pretty bad addiction to my phone. Fortunately, exercising (especially when skiing and biking) turns off the urge to look at my phone. The tech companies have figured out how to make us zombie’s, watching clips. I am not sure of the solution, but I know legislation is wrong and I am not sure timers are the solution either. Maybe I will get the answer in the last 100 pages if I can put my phone down…. At least I have figured out how to turn off the advertising in the crush game on my tablet :>) . That is a big win!
