‘The Eiger Sanction’ w/ Cody Townsend & Jonathan Ellsworth (Ep.38)

On Blister Cinematic, Cody and Jonathan discuss The Eiger Sanction, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this week; it stars Clint Eastwood, the biggest movie star in the world at the time; and, importantly, Alex Honnold has called this the most realistic climbing film that Hollywood has ever produced. So … is Alex right? And how does the rest of the film hold up?

Today Cody Townsend and I are talking about The Eiger Sanction, since it celebrates its 50th anniversary this week; it stars Clint Eastwood, who was the biggest movie star in the world when it came out; the film was also directed by Eastwood; and perhaps most importantly here, Alex Honnold has called The Eiger Sanction the most realistic climbing film that Hollywood has ever produced. 1. If there is one thing, I am learning from Blister Cinematic: I can overlook a lot of bad movie for cool action scenes. Clint Eastwood is terrible actor who somehow some way punches WAY above his weight and got some really good movies.

My Hot Take, As an action star who fights in every single one of his movies, his fights scenes are TERRIBLE and it is because of him.

Anyway, the climbing and the premise of the movie are fantastic. I was entertained for the whole movie waiting for the next climbing scene. Like you Cody, I agree the movie was better because they didn’t make it to the top. This movie with all of the problems of being a 1975 action movie staring Clint Eastwood, is nothing more than a way to sell movie tickets and popcorn to 15 to 22 year old men. It probably did that very well. But everything outside of the climbing did not age well. Not at all! Even the 15 year old boy in me was disappointed with the training scene.

There are 2 items I would want from the movie. 1) The Bronco 2) The jacket Clint Eastwood is wearing when they arrive at the Eiger the day before the climb.
I think they could remake this today, update the script a bit, and it would be a hit. Imagine this being done with modern digital 4k or 8k video via drone and watching at an IMAX theater.

Looking forward to next weeks show. Funny I was talking to one of my much younger coworkers about View to a Kill as she just returned from Paris. She knew nothing about Duran Duran / James Bond etc. Dang we are getting old. Hahaha
