‘Johnny Tsunami’ w/ Mike Rogge, Justin Bobb, & Jonathan Ellsworth (Ep.46)

Is it possible that a Disney kids movie from 1999 is the single best movie ever made about the age-old clash between skiers & snowboarders? It is, and ‘Johnny Tsunami’ is also a contender for our highest award, the ‘Single Best Film in its Class.’ Listen to Blister Cinematic to hear why

  1. Can not believe 2 of the 3 people on this episode didn’t see the movie as a kid! Definitely with Rogge on this one. These 3 Disney films were the best thing ever and the closest thing to action films a lot of us had

    • I can’t believe that you seem to agree so much with Rogge!?!

      (Just kidding.)

I have to say, I really loved the mix of our various perspectives in this conversation. I came into watching this worried that this might just be a pretty dumb kids movie. After watching it… but even moreso, after our conversation… I really do think this has to be regarded as an important film in ski / snowboard film history. Good stuff. Wow could ‘Brink’ possibly be in our Blister Cinematic future?!?

  2. This was a fun one gentlemen.
This episode on Blister Cinematic 100% proves the 10 to 15 year old boy in me is very much alive in this 56 year old body. I loved the movie, it almost brought me to tears (yeah I know terrible). I got past the bad acting because well it was a canned script that is the same story arc of so many movies we love. So yes this movie can be, and is being remade today. Just with different characters and different subjects, but the same feel good story.

The skiing / riding was well done, and probably caused a lot of parents to take their kids to the local bump to have peace in the household.
Best line was young Johnny on the beach with Sam and Grand Pa, where he restates Grandpa’s wisdom of “You just gotta deal” with what life gives you. Wait that sounds a lot like the line in Point Break, where “you can’t just call Time Out because things aren’t looking good”. haha.
Need to know more. Did the Dad hate Grandpa because he was never around because he was in jail all of the time? (Cary Tagawa, has played the bad guy in every movie that I have seen him in). Is that why he is chasing the security of a stable well paying career vs. the life of a Surf Bum?
If the timeline for this movie is close to real life, Sam’s Marine Dad does 2 years in Iceland and finally gets transferred to Hawaii. Just in time for Sam to be 18, grown up and going to college in another Snowy and Cold place. Sucks for Sam.

Keep up the good work gentlemen. It’s been a long summer. Hopefully we only have 16 more weeks until the “White Ribbon of Death” calls us back to the resorts, and justifying early season turns on crappy snow.
