The winner of this week’s Gear Giveaway will get Mystery Ranch’s new Scepter 35L pack!
The Scepter series is the brand’s completely overhauled alpine line, designed to excel while climbing, mountaineering, and ski touring. To accomplish this, Mystery Ranch made the Scepter packs modular — you can strip down almost all of their accessories, making for versatile packs that can go from a burly gear hauler to a minimal summit pack.
When set up with all of its features, the Scepter 35 provides ice tool storage, external crampon storage, and two carbon stays that give you very solid support for long approaches. Even with all of its features, the Scepter 35 comes in at a pretty low weight of ~1480 grams. But take off all those accessories, and you can get the weight down to under a kilogram.
Beyond its modular design, the Scepter includes several alpine-friendly features like a sleek lid that serves as a place to stow a rope, and its reversed design means that you can access the interior of the pack even when the pack is face-down. It also includes separate compartments for wet and dry gear (or avy tools). Lastly, it wouldn’t be a Mystery Ranch pack if it wasn’t burly and supportive, so Mystery Ranch chose to use a 330-denier Robic fabric, YKK zippers, and a sturdy compression-molded foam back panel with a removable hip belt.
