We took a few days away from the club fields, the nutcrackers, and the rope tows of Canterbury to check out Treble Cone—the largest ski area in the Wanaka / Queenstown region.

It’s about 5 hours to Wanaka from Canterbury. The drive is breathtaking, and the lakes along the way are arresting
After several beautiful roadside stops, we arrived at night in Wanaka, and the town welcomed us with fireworks
Technically, the fireworks were part of the closing ceremonies for the 2013 New Zealand Winter Games, but whatever. We still felt welcome.
In the morning, we woke up to this
Then headed up to Treble Cone.
The roadside views did not get any worse
And when you actually get to Treble Cone, the views somehow manage to get better still
