2nd Look: 2014-2015 Atomic Elysian

Drops & Rollers

While the Elysian performed very well around the mountain, I found it to be less built for jumping. When sending small airs, the skis didn’t provide much pop. I believe the carbon inserts are coming into play here, keeping the ski stiff and preventing the poppy, jibby feel I look for when hitting features.

I use the 169cm Atomic Millenium with Dynafits for a touring setup, which is a fairly similar (though fatter) ski to the Elysian, with its 20% tip rocker, 60% camber, 20% tail rocker and 110mm underfoot. The softer flex of the Millenium provides a significantly more poppy sensation when hitting rollers or drops.

I personally like the playful feel of the Millenium far better than the stiffer Elysian, but if you prefer a damper ride and don’t enjoy leaving the ground, then the Elysian will likely be a better pick than the Millenium.

Powder

Alas, I have yet to encounter any deep powder on the Elysian, but if I do get lucky, I’ll be sure to update this review. Stella found the Elysians to be reliable in both small- and large-radius turns, with decent flotation for a narrower 95mm waist ski. From my time on the Elysian, I suspect I would find similar results, though I definitely wouldn’t be dying to take these out on a 24-inch day, as something fatter would be my first choice.

Bottom Line

I came out feeling pretty pleased with the Elysian’s all-around performance. They destroy groomers, providing a stable and reliable platform with which to rail turns of varying sizes. Trees and bumps were no threat to the agile Elysians, and they were stiff and damp enough to handle crud well. These aren’t a jib ski, but that won’t faze ladies who prefer not to leave the ground. I would also love to see Atomic make longer sizes available in the future.

I think the Elysian is a good match for intermediate to advanced ladies looking for a versatile all-mountain ski that won’t disappoint during occasional powder storms.
