Last spring, I wrote a full review of the Mons Royale Mid Hit Hoodie, and I’ve loved it so much, I wanted to include it in this collection, even though it isn’t technically a fleece.

Founded in 2009, Mons Royale is based out of Wanaka, New Zealand, and they make technical merino layers in stylish cuts.

From the moment I got the Mid Hit Hoodie a year and a half ago, it has become my go-to layer for every season and for almost every activity; I wear it pretty much every day.

I absolutely love the way the Mid Hit Hoodie feels—super soft and smooth. I’ve spent a good amount of time wearing different weights and brands of Merino wool, and so far, the Mons Mid Hit Hoodie is the softest and most comfortable next-to-skin. Where other Merino garments may feel itchy, fail to wick properly, or start to smell over time, Mons Royale wool has stood out in terms of both performance and style.

At 5’6”, I generally wear a Small or Medium, and the Small Mid Hoodie definitely fits true to size and worked best for me.

The women’s Mid Hit Hoodie has a long fit in the torso, and it falls about nine inches below the waistline on my pants. Generally, it’s a bit too long to wear it with shorts. The Mid Hit Hoodie also has a slim fit, and zips up snugly around my waist and hips.

The sleeves on the Mid Hit Hoodie are also the perfect length for me, and comfortably rest at the base of my fingers. The thumbholes are well positioned and I find myself using them more often than not.

Another feature I like is the high neckline, which rests just below my chin when fully zipped and adds a little extra warmth. The hood fits nicely on a bare head or with a hat, and never felt too bulky.

The Mid Hit Hoodie has held up incredibly well over time, although I really don’t have to wash it that often. It just doesn’t stink. Right after I started wearing the Mid Hit Hoodie, I noticed the material getting fuzzy and I thought it was going to pill. To my surprise, the fabric smoothed out once I washed it and it still has yet to pill.

The listed price for the Mid Hit Hoodie on the Mons Royale website is $260 New Zealand dollars, which comes to about $220 USD. However, other distributors in the US list the Mid Hit Hoodie for around $195, which falls somewhere in the middle of competitors’ prices. So, even at full price, the Mons Royale Mid Hit Hoodie isn’t more expensive than most other full Merino zip-ups, and you can most likely find it for less than other brands.

If you plan to invest in a high-quality, Merino midlayer that has style, you should absolutely check out the Mons Royale Mid Hit Hoodie. Its softness can’t be beat, it looks great, and you may just end up wearing it as much as I do.
