I first learned about Fjallraven this past fall, and I’ve since been quite intrigued.
Fjallraven is a Swedish company that was one of the first to build and sell framed packs for backpacking in the 1960s. Over the years, they refined their packs, while expanding to sell tents and sleeping bags. Today, they also make clothing, and are dedicated to producing durable outdoor apparel, that in my opinion, has a very cool, rugged, stylish look.
I’ve been wearing the Fjallraven Abisko Fleece Hoodie for the last several months now, and it quickly became one of my favorites. What I noticed initially when I first put it on was how comfortable it is.
The Abisko is a medium-weight fleece that has a good amount of stretch to it. The outer part of the hoodie is made of a soft, smooth brushed fabric that is a tiny bit slippery. The inner fleecy material is also really really soft and cozy next-to-skin.
At 5’6″, I usually wear a Small in hoodies, and the Small Abisko fits me perfectly. It’s slightly fitted, but loose enough for a layer or two underneath, and is the perfect length, coming down to about the middle of my butt.
The collar rests just below my chin, but is fairly stiff so it doesn’t flop over and keeps my neck warm.
The Abisko fleece is warm, and makes a good mid-weight layering piece. It’s enough to wear over just a long sleeve shirt on cooler fall or spring days down to 50°F or so. The fleece is still thin and stretchy enough to not feel restricting under a lighter puffy or jacket, and I’ve worn it about half the time while skiing, and the other half of the time around town.
The Abisko has large thumbholes that I use about half of the time. There is an elastic band around the cuff, which feels comfortable when it’s on my wrists, but is a little tight when stretched out over my knuckles while using the thumbholes.
The hood is a good size and fits on my head comfortably either without a hat or with a beanie. There is also a elastic lining around the edge of the hood, which allows it to sit securely on my head.
The fleece’s two hand pockets are large, but don’t have any sort of closure system.
Although the Women’s Abisko Fleece Hoodie is no longer found on the Fjallraven site, it would be worth checking in at one of their stores to see if it’s still available. They have stores in several towns and cities across North America, including Boulder, Burlington, Seattle, and Vancouver, to name a few. I’ve also tried on several other pieces from Fjallraven, and while I won’t go into too much detail here, I loved everything I tried on, and was really impressed with their clothing’s craftsmanship and style.
The Fjallraven Abisko Fleece Hoodie is a simple and stylish zip-up that is incredibly comfortable, warm, and well made. Fjallraven is an interesting company making high quality apparel, and they’re certainly worth checking out.
