What can you learn when you analyze hundreds of thousands of ski turns? What does it tell you about ski technique? And what can be learned about the gear you use to make those turns — and the gear we test and evaluate? I discuss all of the above with the team at Carv.

Thanks for posting this.
I’ve been intrigued CARV, but have held off getting it because the consistent feedback I’ve read online from expert (not elite) skiers is that it doesn’t help them with some of the key areas in which they need to improve.
Specifically, a key aspect of expert skiing concerns what the hips are doing—they need to have the appropriate degree of levelling and countering for the shape and phase of the turn.
And a limitation with CARV has been that the sensors have no direct information on the orientation of the hips, so this can only be done by inference. And the inference developed thus far (at least in past seasons) has not been adequate to provide coaching on the hips.
Can any of the CARV experts address this?
I’m also curious about the following:
Does CARV assess the relative weight on the inside vs. outside ski?
Does CARV detect excessive inside tip lead?
Suppose you initiate your turn by tipping the inside ski, such that initially the inside ski’s angle is greater than that of the outside ski. You see this in many WC racers. Does this give you a reduced CARV score because of reduced edge similarity? Does CARV’s coaching algorithm look not only at the edge similarity, but the timing of the tipping of the inside vs. the outside ski?
Does CARV’s algorithm take into account the gradient of the slope when determining the optimum degree of turn closure? [E.g., in powder, the steeper the slope, the more closure is needed, everything else being equal.]
You mentioned CARV looks for a float phase in powder. There should also be a (less pronounced) float phase on groomers (as in powder, this happens at the transition). Does CARV look for this?
So finally we find out the real reason why the Summit has been moved to Snowbird, it‘s just so the Blister team can stay at or near the top of CBMR Carv rankings!
Seriously, thanks a lot for this discussion, so interesting to learn more about Carv and the development of the product, some exciting stuff there. I am part of the beta testing group and have been so impressed with the responsiveness and helpfulness of the Carv team. Looking forward to the next developments as it has 100% improved my skiing.
Ha! When all our top scores got beaten by athletes at the Summit, it mostly just made me trust the scoring system even more…
