Intro (by Jonathan Ellsworth)
Line calls the Mordecai “a powder ski from Eric Pollard designed to butter and slash its way around the mountain.” You can check out our review of the 186 cm Mordecai, and the chief question we have about the 193 cm Mordecai is its ratio of playfulness to stability. (This is the same question we have about the 190 cm vs. the 184 cm Line Sir Francis Bacon.)
Flex Pattern
Again it’s a bit surprising to us how stiff these skis are — their flex patterns don’t scream “playful,” but anyone interested in a ski this long is probably interested in a pretty playful ride that still offers good all-mountain stability. And I can’t immediately think of another ski of this weight, length, and stiffness that has such a progressive mount point (-2.1 cm). Pretty cool.
Hand flexing the 193 Mordecai and the 190 Bacon, here’s how we’d describe their flex patterns:
Flex Pattern – Mordecai 193 cm
Tips: 8-8.5
Shovels: 8.5-9
In front of Toe Piece: 10
Underfoot: 10
Behind Heel piece: 10-9
Tails: 8.5
Flex Pattern – Sir Francis Bacon, 190 cm
Tips: 8.5
Shovels: 8.5-9
In front of Heel Piece: 10
Underfoot: 10
Behind Heel piece: 10-9
Tails: 8.5 / 9
So yes, the differences are very subtle, but the Mordecai is slightly softer at the tips and tails. Which is to say that these are two quite-stiff skis that are also designed to play.
Bottom Line (For Now)
For a long time now we’ve held that heavily rockered, wider skis didn’t need to have super soft shovels to feel playful and maneuverable. And the 193 Mordecai is going to be a very interesting test of that theory.
And you can now read Cy Whitling’s review of the 193 cm Line Mordecai on the next page.
NEXT: Full Review
HI there,
I’m pretty keen on this ski, but I’m getting myself in a twist re: what length!? My current go-to powder ski is the good ol’ Mr Pollard’s Opus, which I’ve got in a 178 and it feels like that’s a good length for my height/weight (5’8’/154). I find it pretty stable, and has plenty of float (maybe even too much – I can’t sink these things!). I would have just pulled the trigger on the 179s BUT I skied some Black Crow Atris this year (178) and they felt really short. I realise that they’re a totally different ski, but I’m spooked by the numbers :)
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Ash
