2010-2011 Dynafit Titan alpine touring boot

I would strongly recommend playing with the two forward lean settings on the boot, and trying out different spoilers in the rear cuff. I found the red spoiler dug into my calf in a strange sort of way in the greater of the two forward lean settings, so I removed it, inserted my own slightly thicker, after market spoiler, and skied the boots in the shallower lean angle. This was my sweet-spot in the boots. Your mileage might be different, but I would suggest experimenting.

I did find the Titan to ski with much more of an “alpine” ski boot feel than the Scarpa Mobe, which had a distinct “touring” feel (which, in terms of a boot’s downhill performance, is not a compliment. Clarifying here just in case you haven’t yet had your morning coffee).

Gripes:  I didn’t care for the power strap, but I didn’t feel that it affected performance. The walk mode lever felt sort of cheap, but I had no issues with it. I also didn’t love the buckles or their layout, but, once again, no real issues, aside from seeing signs of scuffing on the lowest buckle of the upper cuff that were caused by their rubbing against the highest buckle of the lower cuff while skiing.  This has me slightly concerned, but again, I didn’t notice it while actually skiing.

Summary: If either long tours or serious mountaineering feats are your thing, you’ll probably want an AT boot that is a bit lighter and softer than the Titan. If, however, you rock alpine race boots for resort skiing, and want the most anatomical and best fitting AT boot out there, the Titan deserves your attention. Furthermore, if you wear mid-lasted alpine boots and want something you can use to either ski inbounds or go tour with, then these also warrant a serious look. Finally, if you are a hard charging, dawn patrolling, backcountry-only skier, then you should probably go try these on right now.

  1. Hey Marshal,
Thanks for the sweet review. Do you know how these compare to the Dynafit Zzero? I’ve read that, if your ski is over 100mm in width you go with the Titan, if under, with the Zzero. I don’t know if you’ve skied the Zzero, but if you have, I’d love to hear your input.
    Cheers,
    Alex

  2. hi alex,

the titan and zzeus are the same boot, just with different plastics. the zzero is a totally different boot. much softer, much more volume. the zzero will be a little better for straight touring needs, but these days, the tlt5 is going to tour significantly better AND ski significantly better than the zzero. hope that helps.

  3. Hey Marshal, have you spent much time on the Zzeus? What is your take on the Zzeus/Titan comparison? I’m trying to figure out if I can save money by throwing my powerwraps in pair of used Zzeus’ and get a boot that can drive fat skis and charge under my skinny 6′ 150 lb frame. Thanks!

  4. greetings andrew, the titan and zzues are nearly the same boot. the zzeus is just made from softer plastic, and does not have the rear spoiler in the cuff. if the titan was a 100 flex boot, the zzeus is about a 90. hope that helps? cheers!
