This week, 55 years ago in 1969, the movie ‘Downhill Racer’ came out, starring two legendary actors, Robert Redford and Gene Hackman. The film critic Roger Ebert calls this “the greatest sports movie ever made,” and today, we’re discussing ‘Downhill Racer’ with one of the greatest American downhillers of all time, Daron Rahlves.
Now normally, our advice is that you should watch the film before listening to our conversation about it, but in the case of ‘Downhill Racer,’ we think that listening to our conversation first might help you appreciate the film even more, and see why Daron Rahlves & Roger Ebert both love it so much.

one of my favorite movies – thanks! also check out The Man Who Skied Down Everest. One of best documentaries ever.
The Blister squad should all go and do the annual “hobbyist postrun” on the Streif (the course on which the Hahnenkamm is run) as one of your iTunes-likes-driven group activities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoLNdqh1jYQ
Downhill Racer doesn’t make as much sense if you don’t know the histories of Buddy Werner (the first US Hahnenkamm winner, and the only one before Rahlves), Billy Kidd, and especially Spider Sabich. Redford has said that he patterned Chappellet mostly on Sabich, and I totally buy that, right down to his problematic relationships (for those who don’t recognize the reference, Sabich was shot to death by his apparently-scorned girlfriend in 1976)
