James Bond films have probably put skiing and snowboarding in front of more people than any other film series. Today, I’m discussing that fact with James-Bond-aficionado, Simon Stewart, and then, in honor of the 25th anniversary of ‘The World is Not Enough,’ we break down that film — and its absolutely-all-time ski scene.

Ok, that was an amazing ski scene. Beautiful skiing, and the gap jump/cliff drop parachute slicing was super cool. Interesting rabbit hole I fell down googling – a 2001 Ski magazine article by Kristin Ulmer describing a couloir and terrifying avy experience on assignment with the two of them.
But I have to cast a vote for my pick for best Bond ski movie – For Your Eyes Only. I mean, come on, there are motorcycles with spiked tires, a roof jump onto a deck table a la Candide, ski jumping on alpine gear and being chased by a biathlon shooter on Nordic skis, and the insane ski down an actual bobsled track. And that’s not even all the outdoor awesomeness. You’ve got the castle big wall climb, complete with shoelace prussik, plus the diving? And the skiing was really good.
I have a real soft spot for this movie. I was probably 13, we lived out in the country, and one winter weekend we rented it from the video store in town. Then we got snowed in for 4 days, and we probably watched it 10 times. Only now am I wondering if that’s where the seed got planted for my love of outdoor sports later.
And as someone who works in a nuclear related field, the bomb stuff and especially Denise Richards as Christmas Jones are so bad they almost ruin an otherwise fun movie.
Jonathan and Simon:
Well done on bringing James Bond to Blister Cinematic. As you both allude to in your conversation James Bond is a Skiing Legend, as he should be. The character of James Bond is the SUM of all things masculine and successful. The fantasy that goes with James Bond, is doing the best things in the most beautiful locations. Skiing in the eyes of most of the world is a BIG part of that fantasy.
I do not think, I watched this when it came out in the theater. At that time I would have been in my early 30’s and the Pierce Brosnan / 80’s overly coiffed character had run its course. Timothy Dalton same thing. James Bond while being a LONG running and perhaps is the most valuable movie franchise in history absolutely needs the character to change with the times. By the 2000’s the slim, good looking with great hair, Bond was stale. Enter Daniel Craig to save the character.
Ok to the movie. this was fun to watch as all James Bond movies are. The Gadgets, the 1 liners, the beautiful and exotic locations, and of course the beautiful women. It make us all want to be James Bond. Yes, I would want the Speed Boat. The Z8 was like most BWM’s it is a pretty face, over priced, under performs, and has ZERO longevity.
The ski scene was predicable James Bond and as much fantasy as it absolutely should be. But, how did they get their skis on inside of the Helicopter. The off piste skiing was breathtakingly beautiful: Blue Bird, No Wind, and Pristine snow (well minus the parts where you could see it was groomed corduroy) The bad guys really need to take some time at the gun range.
The best character, was the Casino Owner / Caviar Factory Owner. Best 1 liners of the movie. If he survived he for sure wins the movie.
15 yr old boy award (yes this is my addition to Blister Cinematic) goes to James Bond. He plays with all of the Toys, he is always right, and most importantly he does sleep with all of the beautiful women in the name of King and Country.
What aged the worst. Dr. Christmas. I do not know if it was the acting, the script or what. But the Beautiful Face, Tomb Raider outfit, and even though she is a Nuclear Scientist she still comes across as DUMB. Not good. Btw, Jonathan I agree with you Denise Richards (Starship Troopers). Same with the Dr. who cleared James Bond for duty. We like SMART Women who act like SMART women even if they do the same things. (Yes it is a dichotomy).
Another thing. Triathlon has killed the Drama of almost all water scenes for me. NO ONE is holding their breath for that long in Cold open water let alone rushing flood waters inside of a submarine. Yes is my problem though.
I have taken up a enough space here. Looking forward to the next James Bond movie / ski discussion. “For Your Eyes Only” has some good skiing in it. BTW, I think Rudy’s cousin is one of the East German bad guys in this movie (haha). And Simon, while I have never driven a Lotus Turbo Esprit / Cannot afford a Lotus / I can have an opinion on a Lotus / and it is not good. I cannot remember which Bond Movie that Matchstick / Shane McConkey did a parody on. But good skiing there as well.
