Mountain Gazette owner & editor, Mike Rogge, is back to talk about Travis Rice’s Natural Selection SKI comp and the importance of being “stewards of the culture.” We also talk about the virtues of crappy old gear; Jim Morrison’s excellent trip report in the new issue of Mountain Gazette; Mike’s unorthodox picks for movies to cover on Blister Cinematic; and more.

Jonathan,
I know you will do the right thing on Blister Cinematic…. (Don’t listen to Rogge: Top Gun Maverick even if there is running in snow in the movie, even if the real Top Gun School is at NAS Fallon right up the road from Tahoe, and even if the Top Gun series are really good movies) It is NOT an outdoor sports movies.
Keep the main thing, the main thing.
We have a really long summer of no skiing, which for me started yesterday. So please don’t make me hate you for 200 days because of “Blister Cinematic – The Top Gun series”.
BTW, I love the Portillo Contest. I cannot enter, because, I would get into a lot of trouble if I won. I hope who ever wins takes lots and lots of pics and video. Perhaps that should be a part of the rules.
Happy Summer and only about ~240 days or so until ski season 2025/26.
Pete
Loved this episode.
Just regarding Blister Cinematic it seems weird to go to any movie that somehow has “outdoor” in it. The majority of war or road movies and westerns play in the “outdoors”.
The outdoor sports should be heavily featured if not be the central focus point.
In regards of skiing I’m still holding my breath for Fire and Ice and Fire, Ice and Dynamite
These are some crazy movies for their time, comparable in some ways to Apocalypse Snow.
Especially for the latter I hope you get someone German or on the prodcast for all the cultural references. Maybe Sebastian from Black Sheep Sports in Munich would be up for it.
Heck, if nobody else shows up, I’d do it!
And we all need some more Ski Ballet in our live.
I don’t think there is any skeet shooting in Dazed and Confused. I think “The dishes are done!” line is from the movie Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead.
I like the idea of professional athletes discussing their favorite movie on the Cinematic podcast.
I watched the Natural Selection Ski Comp, and had/have deeply mixed feelings.
It was a great competition, especially when they moved to the better snow in the second zone for the finals. The skiing was absolutely bonkers, and they had the most overqualified ski ninja I’ve ever seen in my life. I also like the multi-run “tournament” format, though I wish the women had a full 8-ride bracket. It also made me miss the old FWT Haines event.
My misgiving is that IMO they seem to be trying to decapitate (by becoming “the top series” in Travis’ words) the very ecosystem that created many of the riders they featured. Riders like Max Palm, Colby Stevenson, Craig Murray, Hedwig Wessel, and Manon Loschi were there in part because they came up through the FTQ, FWT Jr, and FWT. I won’t try to claim that the FWT “made” Markus Eder (more the opposite IMO) but even so it was part of his success. It’s not clear to me how those “development leagues” can be successful without the FTW itself as a flagship to draw viewers and attention.
I think that we can already see that happening with snowboarding to some degree, where the FWT seems considerably less vibrant than it once was.
My $0.02.
One other remark: The FIS is skiing’s olympic governing body, so as the new owners of the FWT it seems to me that have some “interesting” cards to play in the medium to long term. Hopefully they and Natural Selection will find a happy modus vivendi. It would be unfortunate if this turns into something like FIS/ISF debacle in the 1990s.
I have question on Natural Selection Ski, and I ask from total ignorance. Is the gap between the Men and the Women competitors that large or did we not have the right or enough women competing?
Again I am being totally being respectfull as the terrain looked terrifying (I was gripped while safely sitting on my couch) with skier triggered Avalanches added for more spice. But the men were doing impressive tricks Backs, Corks, Spins etc. and the women doing basic skiing with a few smallish airs mixed in.
I still have the final round to watch so maybe they are saving it for the last round.
Thanks,
Pete
