Jonathan Ellsworth’s preferences for red wines over white wines are well established. But in this conversation and wine tasting, we’re going to see if Eli can change Jonathan’s mind.
This past weekend, Jonathan and Eli opened four bottles of white wines and hit the record button. They tried a few different white varietals and blends that Eli believes may appeal to those staunchly in the red-wine camp to see if Eli can get Jonathan more interested in what certain white wines have to offer.
We’ve also included links to the four wines we tasted if you’d like to try any of these for yourself.

If you get the opportunity J, try a sauterne with oysters or wild salmon as an entree / first course.
The French i know roll their eyes when I refer to it as a dessert wine.
Enjoyed this one. Great choice of white Burgundy Jonathan, tough to beat that!
Not sure I really understand the anti-orange nomenclature? If it‘s cos the grapes are not orange then that‘s fair to an extent, but if it‘s the wine colour it makes no sense. Orange wine is orangeish for sure, but if you are going to be picky about whether the name reflects the colour then what are you going to do about white wine? I have never seen a white wine that is actually white – yellowy, greeny but not white.
On the sweet wines, I get your port apathy, but that‘s another step away from wine as such. Sauternes as Frame mentions, can be great, black muscat (not black by the way!) is some of the best wine of any hue that I have ever drunk. I also had a sweet red once that I was expecting to hate (forget the name) but loved with the right accompanying dish. It‘s a great world of exploration and glad you took the step of being open to try. I look forward to the wine review club….
And just to add if the grape is the driver for your colour naming concern, white wine grapes are not white!
