Outside Sports is a premier ski, bike, and outdoor retailer with multiple locations in the Southern Lakes region on the South Island of New Zealand. Outside Sports first opened in Queenstown in 1995, and was founded by John and Judy Knight after they spent significant time living in and exploring Colorado. In 2015, the Knights were joined as co-owners by Darren and Floortje Grimmett who had managed the Wanaka branch since the early 2000s.
John Knight has an impressive background as a world-ranked professional Ironman triathlete, so bikes and running have always been core to the business.
Today they’re seeing a lot of growth in trail running and gravel bikes – which the endless network of trails in the Southern Lakes region is ideal for.
John and Darren are always looking for new brands to introduce to their customers – who, like their staff, come to them from all over the world. Outside Sports operates from this core mission statement: “The mountains we love inspire us to be New Zealand’s leading supplier of superior mountain sports products for discerning customers. Throughout all of the Outside Sports locations, you will see a broad range of equipment offered by a ton of awesome brands.
For ski and ski hard goods, they specialize in equipment from Atomic, Dynastar, Faction, Head, Salomon, Rossignol, and Scott. They also offer soft goods and snowsports outerwear from Auclair, Spyder, The North Face, and Arc’teryx.
Outside Sports also has an extensive summer presence with a broad selection of mountain and gravel bikes, bike apparel, and bike accessories. Brands include Avanti, Scott, Bold, and Specialized for hard goods, and an assortment of apparel and accessories from brands like POC, Mons Royale, Tinelli, Schoffel, Patagonia, Pearl Izumi, Cat Eye, and Loose Riders.
For the third focus of Outside Sports, they offer a ton of excellent footwear, especially hiking boots and trail running shoes from brands that include Altra, Asics, The North Face, On, Hoka, Salomon, Arcteryx, Hi-Tec, Timberland, Salewa, La Sportiva, and Sorel.

Outside Sports operates an extensive lease and demo program, particularly for ski and bike gear in their Queenstown and Wanaka stores. These locations also offer excellent ski and snowboard tuning, and top-notch bike mechanics year-round.
Outside Sports offers a fit guarantee on any ski boots they sell, so if you purchase a boot with them, you can come back as many times as it takes to make the necessary adjustments until the boot is dialed in for your needs.
