Running Background, Style, and General Preferences

I grew up in the Gunnison Valley, Colorado. My family lived on 38 acres that bordered National Forest land above a ranch, with trails and the outdoors in general being integral to my day-to-day life as a kid. While my main sport growing up was hockey, I joined the cross country team in high school as a means of staying in shape during the off-season.

As an adult, I reacquainted myself with running, first as a means to socialize. Then as I got more into the sport, running became a sort of meditation – a way to maintain both physical and mental health. I soon began running on trails and upping my distances, running my first 50km race in 2012. Though I enjoy racing, it is only a small part of my running life. What I like most is the opportunities it provides to explore the wilderness — running gives me the ability to access more remote mountains and link up longer ridgelines than I could otherwise.

My running routine ranges from 15–40 miles per week on everything from smooth or technical singletrack to gravel roads to mountain ridges. My feet are of average width and arch shape, and I prefer shoes with a wider toe box that still keep the rest of my foot fairly secure. I also prefer shoes with fairly low (or zero) heel-to-toe drop that still have enough cushioning for longer runs and rougher terrain.

Some shoes I’ve clicked with: Altra Superior (original through version 4.0), Hoka Challenger ATR 6 GTX
