What film has had the greatest impact on the life of Blister’s managing editor, Luke Koppa? The one we’re talking about today. ‘180° South’ details the adventures, friendship, and philosophies of Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tomkins; it documents Jeff Johnson’s attempt to retrace their 1968 trip to Patagonia; it features an all-time soundtrack and the animation & artwork of Geoff McFetridge; and the film is just as relevant today as it was when it came out 15 years ago.

Among everything else, we discuss what’s aged the best, what’s aged the worst, who needed BLISTER+ the most, and more.

  1. I really liked this conversation. This is one of my favorite movies as well. The quotes you highlight are some of the best – no question. “She has an excuse she lives on an island in the middle of the pacific ocean!”
I agree that I’d love for Yvonne to be my grandparent. That would be pretty cool.

I also want to say that the original movie, Mountain of Storms, is on Youtube. And it is really great and worth the time. Even before this movie came out I had heard about that movie but it was nowhere to be found.

The idea of being a “Conqueror of the useless” is sometimes how I feel about skiing. We ski to the bottom just so we can go back up and do it all again. Anytime I am on a hike I think about this as well – I am just going to have to go back down. We are doing it for the ride and the adventure.

  2. I went into this movie knowing nothing about the characters or any Back Story. To be honest I was a bit disappointed initially, because I did not understand why / how he got on the boat to start the adventure. Then I figured out he worked for Patagonia. It felt like I was getting into a staged Patagonia commercial selling the mountain and surf fantasy, while knocking down the realities of modern life and urban population growth encroaching on traditional rural – mountain life.

Obviously, with mid and post movie Google Searches, I started figured out more about Yvon and Doug etc. Then things started making sense. The fact that these two guys who are close friends who started 2 of the largest brands in Outdoor clothing is amazing. Even more amazing is they believe in the outdoor lifestyle at their core. Thus the conservation work they have done in Patagonia. Simply Outstanding.
** Hot Take, You make more money, and you can actually live the outdoor dream if you can sell that dream to the masses. **
My need to know more items:
    * What was the reason for Makohe in the movie? Was this a real romance? Something drummed up for the movie. Was she a Patagonia athlete
    * What was the trip back down the mountain like, and was the bushwhacking any easier on the return trip?
Bobak, I also watched Mountain of Storms, after watching 180 South. I really enjoyed that movie, and the sense of adventure. That fake wind sound track did not age well though :>)
Need to know more: Did they drive the van back to California? Or did they sell it for plane tickets.
Blister + Award was definitely Yvon trying to ski.

This Blister Cinematic in my opinion was an excellent 2 movies for 1 podcast in my opinion.

Luke and Jonathan thanks for a good show.
