Kevin Costner, bike racer? Yep, it happened. American Flyers was released 39 years ago this week (August 16, 1985), and Costner would go on to make some of the best sports films of all time, including Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, and Tin Cup. So how well does this bike film hold up? How does it compare to the other bike film written by Steve Tesich, Breaking Away? And was American Flyers funded by the fast-food burger joint, McDonald’s? Simon Stewart and I discuss, and also come up with their best idea ever for a prequel to the film.

  1. Had to laugh when you mentioned that American Flyers might not be something visited over and over again. I beg to differ! I actually own a DVD copy of it which gets use every few years (and I have gotten rid of a lot of more generic DVD’s but holding onto this one…actually a 2 disc set, coupled with Sly Stallone and Michael Caine in Victory…hmmn, a soccer movie, or is it a POW movie…or both…Keep these reviews coming as they are wonderful!!!

    • Thanks, Glenn. And yeah, I think Simon is selling the movie a little short.

I also really like the idea of doing Victory, we just need to figure out the right angle there. I mean, soccer is typically an outoors sport, right??
