On July 20, 1979 — 45 years ago this week —the film, Breaking Away debuted. It’s a movie about one of the biggest (and coolest) bike races of all time (the Little 500, which is still held every year at Indiana University), but it’s also a fantastic coming-of-age movie that was nominated for five Oscars, and won the Oscar for best screenplay.

So in honor of the 45th anniversary of the film, Blister senior bike editor, Simon Stewart, and I debate what’s aged the best; discuss the most rewatchable scenes; and Simon drops an absolute nuclear reactor of a Hottest Take Award. Enjoy!

  1. Hey, I was in the crowd when the Little 500 scenes near the end were filmed, at the ripe old age of 7. They kept moving us around the old stadium to fill out various sections (this was before the current stadium existed)

  2. A note to Simon: Breaking away was set in Bloomington, Indiana (where I grew up), not “Bloomingdale Illinois”

  3. I’m sorry and I love you guys and all that you do but this is too much.

You guys are LITERALY ripping off the Rewatchables podcast that came out on this one June 10th. All of the categories like “hottest take” “most rewatchable scene” have all been a staple of the podcast for years! While I did notice that you employed them for your “Blister Cinematic” podcast they were at least applied to ski movies and such so I didn’t think much of it until I saw that it was the same movie and format this time.

    • No, Steve, with the creation of Blister Cinematic, we are literally spinning off the entire idea of the Rewatchables, and keeping the focus more specifically on outdoor sports films of the past – as well as the new films in this space – because we are massive fans of the Ringer & The Rewatachables. Cody and I have been talking about Bill Simmons and the Ringer – and our love of Chris Ryan et al – for years.

But while I try not to miss episodes of the Rewatchables, it can be hard to keep up, and I did miss this one.

I’d definitely encourage people to listen to their take on the film. I just did, I enjoyed it as always, and it’s interesting to hear what stood out to Simon & me vs what stood out to Bill & Sean & Chris – folks who aren’t as close to the worlds of biking, etc. Fun stuff.

  4. Never watched Breaking Away, I actually thought it was a different movie.

IT was a good way to make a couple of hours on a plane go by faster.

“What Aged the best / What Aged the worst” is the exact same thing in my opinion.
The historical metaphor / message: Midwest small town kids parents who got good paying labor jobs working in the quarry, and then the business dried up. The parents jobs are the Town Cop / Used Car Salesman. There is a lot of weight when the Dad tells David, I am a “Cutter” you are not. Which I take as move forward, not stay the same. Especially when you look at the world we live in today.

BTW I think we are under 140 days till ski season!
    Pete
