  1. Re. Most Canadian news story about the phallic iceberg off Dildo… I’d say it’s a quintessentially Newfoundland news story (which is where I grew up) rather than generically Canadian. So many odd place names there (I’ll add Conception Bay and Come-by-chance to the Dildo and Spreadeagle list), and a lot of humour.

In terms of etymology, I think Dildo is named after a dildo-shaped oar pin from small fishing boats, and Placentia is probably of Basque or French origin. No idea on the others.

  2. Also funny is that late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel was named honorary mayor of Dildo. There is an article on CBC about this.

  3. With any user-submitted/crow sourced app there will be these types of issues, but the community should be filtering bad posts and letting the admins know when something like that is awry. It’s possible an Alltrail user let the admins know of that trail being a 5th class climb but nobody did anything about it cause they assumed they were trying to gatekeep.

I like the idea of them hiring a “fact checker” for each area but I’m doubtful Alltrails or anyone else will actually do that. It’s similar to OpenSteetMap where almost anyone can add routes and the user group is supposed to police it.

Google maps is infamous for sending people on incorrect routes that can endanger their lives. I ran into a stuck car on a 4wd road in winter that google maps suggested to “avoid highways”…they were screwed, many miles away from help, out of cell service on a rarely used road in winter.

Onyx also has its issues. I’ve let them know of a BC ski route that crosses private land right next to a guy’s cabin and the legal route is less than a mile up on USFS land. I worry more eyes seeing this route on Onyx will mean more users trespassing and that’ll get the area closed off.

  4. Either they changed it on All trails after this incident or Cody describing the AllTrails description of the East Teewinot on the app is completely false.

It absolutely lists it as a mountaineering route and absolutely points out that the trail ends at 9000′ and becomes 4th and 5th class climbing. It states you will need technical gear and technical climbing skills to complete the route.

So either they changed this after the fact or Cody is being untruthful, or I hope just uniformed (which I assume since I have generally nothing but positive things to say about Cody).
