Cyclists injuries and deaths from collisions with cars and trucks are on the rise.

In 2020, just here in the United States, 932 bicyclists were killed on U.S. roads. That’s up from 621 deaths in 2010.

In 2021, 966 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes.

In 2022, there were over 850 bicyclists killed and more than 50,000 injured in collisions with cars and trucks.

And in 2023, According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,149 bicyclists were killed in motor vehicle crashes on US roadways.

So while there are a number of reasons we can point to to explain this increase, and there are also a number of things being done to try to reduce the number of collisions, one thing that we’ve never discussed before on Blister is the latest technologies in cars and trucks to mitigate this issue.

What, exactly, is that new tech; how does it work; and are we seeing any promising metrics to show that it’s making a difference?

To answer these questions, I recently spoke with Chad Zagorski, who is the lead engineer of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) at General Motors, and specifically works on bicycle detection technology in GM’s vehicles to help keep cyclists safer on the roads.
