La Marzocco is the most iconic espresso-machine maker in the world, and for many espresso lovers, the name conjures up thoughts of a rich tradition, high performance, obsessive attention to detail, and durable machines that double as works of art.

And this is why, last month, when I was back in one of my favorite cities in the world, Florence, I was delighted to take a day trip to what is basically heaven for any lover of espresso. I went to the La Marzocco Accademia to talk about — and, of course, drink — espresso; meet a number of the terrific people on the La Marzocco team; and delve deep into La Marzocco’s storied past while also getting a look at what the company is up to as they approach their 100th anniversary.

Now, another important thing: if you listened to our conversation last week on CRAFTED, you’ll know that I finally answered the question that many of you have been asking: which particular espresso machine have I settled on? After a whole lot of deliberation and consultation, the winner was the Linea Micra from La Marzocco.

So it was extra special to go to the Accademia and talk with La Marzocco’s product designer, Stefano Della Pietra, about the history and core principles of the company; how Stefano became the lead designer there; how, as a designer, he views innovation — and the task of taking La Marzocco into the future, while staying true to the brand’s storied past.
