This week Venture Snowboards announced that they will also be making Venture skis. So I talked with Venture’s Klem Branner about why skis — and why skis now; what’s harder or easier about making skis vs snowboards; and what, exactly, is this new ski of theirs, the Sultan?

  1. w.r.t. binding portability, I have a couple thoughts about binding portability on skis.

First, the fact that only one foot rests on a ski in one place makes skiers (and especially racers) very sensitive to toepiece placement. A system where you can only move the toepiece in “one insert increments” might not be accepted in the skiing community.

Second, and in support of what Klem says, the first thing I do with every pair of skis is add a couple sets of Binding Freedom insers, usually mounted at nominal (for me) and -1.5 cm (which I think is an acceptable “minimum step size” for all-mountain skis. That both gives me some room to experiment with placement (because I almost always use nominal or move back a little) and also allows by friends to use my skis as lot as they aren’t “too different” from me.

  2. Another really cool episode of Gear30 with quite some interesting topics being discussed.

    1. The reasoning around flat skis/snowboards sounded intriguing, and it drove two questions: Why do most leading companies still build camber skis? What is the impact on skiing technique? Do flat or reversed-cambered skis alter the required technique?
    2. The insert topic. Although there are inserts for skis (e.g., quiverkillers), I could not find anything on the topic on Blister.

These would be 2 interesting topics I would love to hear/read about your expertise on.
