A lot of mountain bike hip packs are pretty cheaply made, and/or lightly tweaked versions of basic casual designs. High Above does things differently, from focusing on MTB-specific designs to making all their packs in the US from top-quality materials. So we went down to High Above HQ to chat about all of it, get the rundown on some upcoming High Above products — including some non-hip-pack models — and see how they go about designing, testing, and making their bags and other gear.

  1. Haven’t listened yet, but if the High above homies are listening: the single most important (and deal breaking ) feature for me in a hip pack is having side-pull adjusters at both sides, vs a standard buckle. It sounds dumb, but one you get used to it you can never go back. It is so far superior of a system it’s not even funny. Seriously, grab a camel back podium flow belt (not the v2) for like $40 and see for yourself. You can tension the belt so much more smoothly and easily, not more sucking in to get it to the appropriate tightness. And the leverage means you can adjust with so much less effort/force. You can adjust it in a pinch with one hand on the fly while you are on the bike. I’m a bit of a hip pack snob because I HATE backpacks, and have tried most on the market. There are a few designs that have so much promise but that I never use because they have a standard center adjusting buckle, with all of its flaws. Sounds like a stupid nit, but trust me, try it for yourself and you will never go back. /rant

    • Hey Brett – we are indeed listening. Thanks for the input. Yes we agree, there are a lot of advantages to that style of adjustment, and it is certainly something we are considering for future iterations. Cheers – Kyle @ High Above
