Today we’re firing back up our series, The Pro’s Gear, where we talk to various pros about their gear preferences and the specific gear they’re currently using. And today, we’ve got a terrific conversation for you with Nikolai Schirmer. Niko has made quite a name for himself by sometimes sailing to — and then, almost always climbing up — very technical lines, then often flashing those lines at ridiculous speeds on relatively lightweight gear.
So in this conversation, Niko and I have the great debate about pin bindings; learn about his approach to selecting gear; discuss the specific gear he’s currently using the most; when & why he prefers lightweight ski gear, and we end with Niko announcing for the first time in public the name of his new film, which is his biggest project ever.

Excellent episode, thank you! Not only is Niko a creative skier, but a creative filmmaker. I feel very lucky to be able to watch (and re-watch) his content for free.
Great podcast. Looking forward to the next podcast with Niko! At the end of last season, I switched my boots to the Scarpa quattro XT– they seem to have the lowest volume fit out of touring boots I have tried. Only took them skinning once, but excited to ski them for real this season…. I think Niko’s point about ROM and friction for the walk mode is a good one. I think that is really what you notice as soon as you put touring boots on- how “easy” does the boot move through the ROM?, not just, how far does it move? The Scarpa seems an improvement over my prior Atomics…
Thanks, Erin. I’m curious, which Atomic boots were you in?
I had the prior Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD 115 women’s boot (not the new Boa version). I like these boots, but they were a bit soft in terms of flex and the instep was always a bit sloppy because I have a low instep. I debated over the Quattro XT vs SL, but chose the XT because I felt the fit was better.
Thanks for the extra details. Once you get more time in the XTs, would love to hear an update on what you think.
Great episode Ive been hoping he would come on the podcast, can’t wait for the second one. His yt channel really is fantastic, I’ve watched some of his videos like 10+ times
Loving the Niko conversations. His content is my absolute favorite on Youtube.
For future discussions of relative safety with touring bindings, you might want to start here: https://skimo.co/tech-binding-release-testing. TLDR: The difference is not so much with the ACL, it’s the old-fashioned tib-fib spiral fracture.
Really enjoyed this discussion, great to hear how Niko thinks about and approaches his skiing, good learning
