Intro

Last January, Lange announced the release of their new Shadow boot collection for the 23/24 season, which effectively replaced their longstanding alpine boot collection, the RX series.

However, this wasn’t a minor change to their alpine boot series, but more of a complete overhaul – not only within their lineup, but also in terms of the established design of two-piece boots.

The Shadow boots feature Lange’s “Dual Pivot & Suspension Blade” technology across the series, and the result is a departure from what we have come to expect from traditional two-piece boots. The Shadow’s layout consists of an additional pivot point below the standard pivot point where the cuff and lower boot meet. Lange’s goal for the dual-pivot layout was to increase and extend the leverage that the boot / skier has over their ski, and in turn, transfer more force / power from the skier with less effort required to do so.

They also added a new type of connection between the cuff and lower boot, which they’ve called the Suspension Blade. This lever is not only intended to build a strong connection between the lower pivot and main pivot, it is also reported to add vibration damping and rearward support.

What Lange says about the Shadow Boots:

“‘Give me a long enough lever… and I shall move the world.’ At Lange, innovation is in our DNA, and we’ve never stopped trying to move the world of skiing. We did it in 1962 when we introduced the first ever plastic ski boot, and we’re doing it again now, with a boot born from the darkest corners of our deepest workshops. Years in the making, the Shadow uses breakthrough dual-pivot technology for greater leverage, creating a chassis that requires half the energy to drive. Power when you want it, stability when you need it, finesse at its finest. Ski better—the Shadow shines a light.

Powerful, responsive, and easy. No boot has ever offered the confidence and stability of the Shadow, and we don’t say that kind of thing lightly at Lange. It’s all about leverage. The Shadow’s breakthrough dual-pivot technology harnesses extended leverage for unparalleled liveliness and drive. Pair that with a bold, new liner that uses space-aged Auxetic foam for a flawless connection, and performance has never felt so comfortable. Join the revolution—come out of the shadows.”

The Shadow Series

Similar to Lange’s former RX collection, nearly all of the Shadow boot models are available in two lasts, a 97 mm “LV” and a 100 mm “MV.”

Here’s a quick rundown on the 23/24 Shadow lineup:

  • Shadow 115 W LV & Shadow 115 W MV
  • Shadow 95 W LV & Shadow 95 W MV
  • Shadow 85 W LV & Shadow 85 W MV

Shadow Men (sizes 24–31.5)

  • Shadow 130 LV & Shadow 130 MV

  • Shadow 100 MV

Weight & Comparisons

The Shadow 115 LV W is a tad lighter than the stated weight of the prior RX 110 LV W that it effectively replaces, though not by much. Within the spectrum of women-specific two-piece alpine boots with similar flex patterns, the Shadow 115 LV W is situated pretty much right in the middle when it comes to weight — not super heavy, nor super light.

Below is a number of our measured weights of other comparable alpine and alpine touring boots. We list the weights of each shell + the weights of each liner, then the total weights of the shells + liners.

22/23 Atomic Hawx Ultra 115 W S (24.5) 1621 g (stated weight)
22/23 Tecnica Cochise Pro W (24.5): 1285 & 1289 + 343 & 330 = 1628 & 1619 g
23/24 Fischer RC4 105 MV BOA VAC GW (24.5) 1324 & 1355 + 349 & 364 = 1673 & 1699
22/23 Nordica Speedmachine 3 115 W (24.5) 1700 g (stated weight)
22/23 Rossignol Pure Elite 120 (24.5) 1387 & 1380 + 323 & 324 = 1710 & 1704 g
23/24 Tecnica Mach1 LV 115 W (24.5) 1347 & 1348 + 350 & 352 = 1716 & 1738 g
23/24 Fischer RC4 105 MV GW (24.5) 1408 & 1395 + 358 + 359 = 1766 & 1751
23/24 Lange Shadow 115 LV W (24.5) 1426 & 1428 + 341 & 343 = 1767 & 1771
23/24 S/PRO Supra BOA 105 W (25.5) 1384 & 1385 + 375 & 375 = 1771 & 1772 g

Things We’re Curious About

We are currently logging days in the Shadow 115 LV W, and you can read about our initial on-snow impressions in our Flash Review, but we still have several things we’re curious about as we spend more time in the boot.

(1) How different does the Shadow’s Dual Pivot and Suspension Blade tech feel when compared to other two-piece boots of similar weights and flex patterns, but more traditional constructions?

(2) How does the supposed increased leverage and power transfer of the Shadow 115 LV W translate across a variety of conditions and terrain? Are there scenarios where this new design is more suitable than others?

(3) How does the Lange Shadow 115 LV W compare to the previous Lange RX series, both in regard to fit and performance?

Stay Tuned

As mentioned in our Flash Review, the fit and feel of the Lange Shadow 115 LV W have been promising (so far), and it looks like we will be spending plenty more days in it throughout the rest of the season — stay tuned for updates.
